THIS EXERCISE REQUIRED US TO OBTAIN A RECOGNIZABLE PATTERN BY MANIPULATING AND ABSTRACTING AN IMAGE USING DIGITAL MEDIA.

THE INITIAL IMAGE

AFTER BEGINNING TO MANIPULATE IMAGES FROM THE ASSIGNED GENRES OF FILM, NATURE, AND MACHINE, THIS WAS THE CHOSEN ONE. THE IMAGE SHOWN IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST TAMPERING OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE WHICH WAS AN LED DISPLAY.

THE CONCEPT

MY CONCEPT DERIVED OFF THE "MERGER" OF THE FILMS OF METROPOLIS AND THE DOORS.
IN ONE HAND, METROPOLIS REPRESENTS THE MACHINE AND ITS ROLE WITH HUMAN BEHAVIOR AND INTERACTION TO THEIR RESPECTIVE ENVIRONMENTS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE DOORS REPRESENTS THE ROLE OF THE RAWNESS OF HUMAN NATURE AND ITS RELATION WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS. ALTOUGH BOTH FILMS FALL UNDER TWO DISTINCT STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS; MACHINE AND NATURE, THEY BOTH SHARE A SIMILITUDE THAT CONNECTS THEM.
THEIR POINT OF CONNECTION COMES INTO PLAY WHEN HUMANS MERGE BOTH SYSTEMS TOGETHER. IN TECHNOLOGY, FOR EXAMPLE THE PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF A MACHINE WILL OFTEN COPY OR IMITATE SOMETHING FOUND IN NATURE. THE EXAMPLE I HAVE POSED IS THAT OF THE SPINAL CORD; WHICH HUMANS HAVE FOUND IT HELPFUL IN CREATING MACHINES BY COPYING ITS FORM AND FUNCTION. THUS, THAT'S HOW I DERIVED WITH THE NAME OF EXOSTOSIS, WHICH IS ABNORMAL SKELETAL OUTGROWTH.

THE GLYPH

IN TRYING TO GET A SKETELETAL SHAPE AND LOOK, THIS IS THE FINAL GLYPH.
ITS VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MEMBERS ARE INTERCONNECTED AT THE CENTER.


2D PATTERN

ONCE INTERCONNECTED AND MULTIPLIED, THE GLYPH CREATES THIS 2D PATTERN.
IT IS SHOWN IN A "NEGATIVE" PORTRAYAL IN ORDER TO RELATE TO AN X-RAY THAT IS TAKEN OF A BONE STRUCTURE.


3D PATTERN

THE 3D PATTERN SHOWS HOW THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL MEMBERS OF A SINGLE GLYPH ARE PUSHED APART FROM EACH OTHER.
